About Us

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1986 to run courses in the following specialties:
(a) Structures
(b) Water Resources and Environmental Engineering
(c) Transportation Engineering
(d) Geotechnical Engineering
(e) Construction Management

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) Degree was recommended for the undergraduate programme, while the postgraduate programme will award Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Engineering and Ph.D degree accordingly.

The programme commenced in 1986 using the three-term structure until the NUC approved minimum academic standard for all Nigerian Universities was introduced in 1989. The programme of the Department, which now runs as a two-semester session programme, was re-arranged to conform to the N. U. C. approved standard. The courses in the programme were further classified into core Civil Engineering Courses, Electives, General Studies and Social Sciences.

The Civil Engineering Department has already graduated thirty sets of undergraduates from 1989 to 2015/2016 academic session, and a number of students with M.Eng. and Ph.D degrees. The student population has risen from 5 in 1986/1987 academic session to 509 in 2015/2016 academic session.

Civil Engineering is the oldest of all the branches of Engineering, and the one dedicated to solving problems of the civilian populace. Broadly speaking, it encompasses the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructural facilities including, but not necessarily limited to, residential/communal/industrial buildings, roads, railway, airports, bridges, water supply and environmental engineering, and hydraulic structures. The training of civil engineers at Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTM) is therefore aimed at producing graduates that are skilled in solving problems associated with the highlighted areas. In order to achieve the strategic goals, Civil Engineering Department has drawn up its Programme which emphasizes practical/field work as well as information and communication technology as critical components of modern civil engineering practice. Our graduates are substantially I.T. compliant.

The vision of the programme is to revolutionize the practice of Civil Engineering such that ultimate utilization of modern information and communication technology takes a centre-stage in Civil Engineering Profession.

The mission of the programme is to establish a centre of excellence in the training of high-level personnel and conducting research in Civil and Environmental engineering, at a level comparable with the best in the world.
